Physical Network Topology

We had PoPs in the following locations

  • Red Centre (Core of network)
  • Clancy (Keynote lecture theatre)
  • Matthews Theatres (Main talks)
  • Matthews Rooms (miniconfs)
  • CLB (Tutorials on Thursday)
  • New College (Accomodation)
  • International House (Accomodation)
  • Shalom (Accomodation)

AARNET provided a Cisco 7204 which we had enable access to as our border router. This was at AARNETs POP at Broadway.

Fibre then came into the Red Centre and terminated on a Cisco 3508G as our core switch. This ran as a VTP Master and controlled all the VLANs.

The other locations then all had either 2912Gs or 2948Gs ie 10/100 Switches with GBIC up links. These were hired.

We used LX GBICs in all locations to connect our switches in a star network.

Logical Topology

The AARNET 7200 had a /30 link on its external interface. AARNET then routed us a /21. This was subnetted on to various VLANs on the 7200 and distributed at Layer 2 by all the switches.
