Wine
Melbourne is encircled by wine regions. It is the only place in the world where you can visit five distinct wine regions within an hour and a half of the city. Along with the wineries themselves you'll find local produce, markets and festivals.
Yarra Valley To the east, discover over 55 wineries in the Yarra Valley. From small family owned vineyards to the famed Chateau Yering and Domain Chandon, you'll taste stunning pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling.
Mornington Peninsula and Geelong The Mornington Peninsula is just an hour or so from the city and boasts in excess of 170 vineyards many of which have wineries attached. The region serves up sea views and great food to accompany the wines. On the other side of the bay is the Geelong region where you will find smaller wineries producing estate grown and bottled wine at the gateway to the Great Ocean Road.
Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Just 15 minutes from Tullamarine Airport is the small Sunbury region, originally planted in the mid 1800s, specialising in peppery shiraz and elegant chardonnay. Travel further north and you are soon in the Macedon Ranges where the impressive Hanging Rock soars above vineyards that produce high quality cool climate varieties.
With this many regions so close to the city it's easy to jump in the car and visit one or two in a day. If you can't get out of Melbourne, visit specialty wine shops to get your fix of Victorian wine.
