Emergencies
- What defines an emergency?
- Is it an emergency?
- What sort of priority does it have?
- Whom do we notify?
- Liability of providing first aid?
Please keep this page fairly short - we want to avoid having too much information on it as it makes finding relevant information a problem in an emergency.
Emergency Contact List
Details for all the required contacts. Needs to be expanded. We should consider contacting various agencies in advance, where possible.
| Service | Phone |
|---|---|
| Ambulance/Fire/Police | 000 |
| National Security | 1800 123 400 |
| Venue Emergency Contact | xxxx xxxx (or ext. xxx) |
| LCA Daytime Emergency Contact | xxxx xxxx |
| LCA Nighttime Emergency Contact | xxxx xxxx |
Venue address
We need to be able to give clear and accurate addresses to any emergency services we call, so they should be listed with the emergency numbers (especially where they are not obvious). We may be able to provide some of these services with details in advance, but this should not be relied upon.
- conference venue
- accomodation
- evening events
- partners' program items
Allergic reactions
Each delegate should be given a card that lists what they are allergic to, and if known, what treatment should be administered. This information should be provided at registration but only printed out on the first day of the conference (in case they need to add stuff). Such information should be on a card inserted into their Lanyard, where it's easily accessible. Details of the card should be brought to the attention of all delegates when they collect their schwag as well as at the keynote and the penguin dinner.
The data on the card should probably include:
- Food allergies (eg: Seafood, Peanuts)
- Type of reaction
- Treatments if known
- Medicine allergies (eg: Penicillin, Asprin)
- Type of reaction
- Treatments if known
- Other allergies (eg: Hayfever)
- Type of reaction
- Treatments if known
- Current medication (avoids mistreatment)
- Ailments (eg: Asthma)
Note that this is just a bit of a braindump at the moment. Some people may feel this much information is a bit of an invasion of privacy. We may need to stipulate that these details are the responsibility of the delegate, and that they indemnify LCA of any omissions on their part.
Physical injuries
- Assessing the injury
- Does it warrant calling external help?
- Administering first aid
- We need at least one first aid kit, mainly for things like:
- Bandaids
- Dressing
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Mirror
- We need at least one first aid kit, mainly for things like:
- First aid options at the venue
- Need to contact venue
- Contacting an ambulance
- Need to provide accurate details for prompt access
Evacuation procedure
- What constitues a reason for evacuation?
- Fire
- Electrical hazard
- May only require cordoning off affected area
- Unsafe building
- eg: Roof or wall collapsing
- Chemical
- eg: Gas leak
- Terrorism
- eg: Bomb
- Other
- To be worked out once a venue is booked - venue will probably have its own evac procedure already;
- If it's a university, should check that it's applicable out of semester.
- We need to know any existing procedure.
- If there is no existing procedure, we need to create one.
- Talk to various authorities for suggestions.
Assembly Areas
- Multiple areas a necessity, and evaluated for their safety in various scenarios (eg: Fire, Biohazard, Chemical, Electrical, Acts of Nature).
- To be worked out once a venue is booked - venue will probably have designated assembly areas already.
- We need to know where they are and how to get to them.
- If there are no set assembly areas, we need to create them.
- Talk to various authorities for suggestions.
Colds/Influenza/Viruses
- Do not recommend any medications!
- Referral to a doctor.
- Nearest doctor (day, night, 24hr), pharmacy (day, night, 24hr), hospital; dental; any other?
- If serious (Sars, Bird Flu, etc), notification options for people who may have had contact with them.
- Implications for the conference in general.
Lost/Locked out
- Need to provide a number(s) for delegates to call if they get lost in Melbourne and need directions or picking up.
- Where possible we should try to give directions rather than expending manpower giving people lifts places.
- Contacts necessary if a delegate gets locked out of their accommodation.
Note: We could suggest using "1800 Reverse" if people are stranded without money. We need to investigate re: costs.
Other
Anything that doesn't fit in the other areas.
