Open Source Victoria
Dear Ms Benjamin,
Open Source Victoria is an Industry Cluster consisting of over 80 Victorian firms and developers which provide services and technology related to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS.) Open Source Victoria offers marketing, advocacy and information referral services, and aims to raise the profile of FOSS in Victoria and work with other similar organisations across Australia.
OSV believes that Open Source technologies are able to deliver the best value-for-money platform and application software available. Linux is a good example. We appreciate that Linux.conf.au is a community based conference organised and run by volunteers and as such works in much the same way as open source software is developed.
Through OSV the Victorian Open Source Business Community would like to express their support for a Melbourne based linux.conf.au in 2008. Melbourne is one of the world's great conference and meeting locations. Linux.conf.au is one of the world's great technical conferences. Open Source Victoria looks forward to the opportunity the bid presents for our members to participate in this important event in this great city.
Thank you for inviting OSV to stand behind your bid. We are happy to do so to help support the community that develops the software our members use, deploy, service and support.
regards,
Con Zymaris
Convenor,

DCLABS
Dear Ms Benjamin
DCLABS wishes to express our support to you in bringing LCA 2008 to our home town of Melbourne Australia.
Melbourne has always offered very strong Linux support base both privately and commercially. There are also a number of IT based groups such as MLUG, LUV, JBUG, and many others that call this city their home and would be expected to rally behind an LCA.
Melbourne also has a history of raising the bar when it comes to major events and I would expect that a Melbourne based LCA 2008 would provide a significant impetus to the further adoption of Linux in the Australian marketplace.
regards

Computerbank
27th April 2006
Dear Donna,
We are pleased to be able to provide a letter in support of the Melbourne bid to host the Linux Australia Conference in 2008.
Computerbank Victoria recycles and refurbish donated computers with open source software to help bridge the digital divide. Last year we distributed over 300 computers to disadvantaged Victorians - most of these people had never heard of Linux before. To date we have distributed over 1600 Linux based computers within Australia and overseas.
As a community based, non-profit volunteer based organisation we do not have the resources to send people to expensive training courses. A Melbourne conference gives Computerbank members and associated people such as volunteers, students and unemployed an opportunity to participate and attend.
A local conference increases the chances of Computerbank members and volunteers presenting conference papers. The cost of travel and accommodation is often a prohibitive factor for people who work and volunteer at Computerbank. We could run a session on our customised Linux distribution and the reasoning behind it. Additionally Computerbank would be happy to offer tours of our building in West Melbourne while the conference is running. This would give attendees a chance to see Linux in a community environment and to learn of the experiences we have had distributing Linux to new computer users.
9 years is a long time, it would be good for Linux people to come back and experience the countries best coffee and pizza.
Look forward to being with you in 2008,
- Kylie Davies

SUPPORT FOR LINUX AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE 2008 BID IN MELBOURNE
The Victorian Government has as a major policy pillar in ICT of “Growing tomorrow’s industries today”. Your teams bid to win the 2008 annual Linux Australia Conference for Melbourne is very much in line with what the state government is trying to foster. As Manager of ICT Investment and Business Development, I can wholeheartedly endorse our support in your ongoing endeavour to land and effectively organise the event.
There are numerous avenues that can be pursued within government to support your bid, both financially and morally. I look forward to discussing these aspects as the business model becomes available of your approach. I have also had favourable responses from related industry participants who are keen to add their support where appropriate.
There is also good traction starting to occur within the Office of the Chief Information Officer with regard to a wider use of Linux both in the internal running of Government ICT applications and writing policy procedures to entice the evaluation of numerous Open Source driven options through tender allocation methodology. This bodes well for the future involvement of Linux in the fertile climes of ICT to be found in Melbourne, especially by the time that your event is planned to occur.
We appreciate your endeavour and look forward to helping you make this event a great success and inspiration for further Linux understanding and utilisation in the region.
- Yours sincerely

Perl Training Australia
Dear Ms Benjamin
On behalf of Perl Training Australia, I am writing in support of the MEL8OURNE 2008 bid for running linux.conf.au in Melbourne in 2008. We are certain that your team is capable of providing a fantastic conference, and we promise to help as much as we can.
Although we provide Perl training for many operating systems, we recognise that a local Linux.conf.au is of great value to us. These conferences support and strengthen all of the open source communities by providing a location for people to get together and learn from each other. They also raise the profile of Free and Open Source Software, which thanks to the hard work of Linux Australia, Open Source Victoria, Open Source Industry of Australia and many other groups, is making such a big impact on government and business.
Many thanks to you and your team for your hard work in the bid so far and for inviting us to stand behind it. I look forward to helping the 2008 linux.conf.au be the best conference so far!
- All the very best,
- Jacinta Richardson
