Introduction

A local guide of businesses in the area for Lunch, Dinner and After Dinner activities.

This might be part of TheGuide, but it's probably more convenient if it's separate (or a lift-out section) - less to carry around when you're out and about.

All

  • All venues listed need to be notified well in advance and closer to the dates of the conference
  • Might be nice to list approximate distances from the conf venue
  • Maps of the area with listed businesses/venues marked
    • Maps may cost money (royalty fee) - check with map suppliers on usage
    • Probably need maps of various scales to cover different ranges
      • eg: Lunch/Snack stuff needs to be close, Dinner and After Dinner activities are further ranging
  • Something to consider here might be The Age: either have it able to be picked up from the registration desk, or go around the colleges leaving it outside everyone's doors (or both). It's not tremendously high-cost (less than $1.20/person/day), but I think it's something to consider, again in the light of integrating into Melbourne as much as possible.

Lunch/Snacks

  • Make sure it's achievable to get there, eat lunch/snack, and get back to the conf without killing yourself

Vegetarian Restaurants and Allergen specialists

  • The Vegie Bar - 380 Brunswick St, Fitzroy (03) 9417-6935
  • Shakahari Vegetarian Restaurant - 201-203 Faraday St, Carlton (03) 9347-3848
  • Moroccan Soup Bar - 183 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North (03) 9482-4240
  • Gopal's Vegetarian Restaurant - 139 Swanston St, Melbourne (03) 9650-1578
  • The White Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant - 185 Victoria St, West Melbourne (03) 9326-6040
  • Allergy Block - store specialising in allergy free products located close to Melbourne Uni. http://allergyblock.com.au/
  • Mr Natural Vegetarian Pizza - cnr Brunswick St/Alexandra Pde (north side) - specialises in vegetarian/vegan pizzas

Halal/kosher/other SDR specialists

  • Abla's, Elgin St, Carlton? Excellent Lebanese food, pretty sure it's halal.
  • Unfortunately, most kosher seems to be centred around St Kilda/Caulfield, rather than the north side.

Dinner

  • Remember that delegates will travel further than for Lunch/Snacks
  • May tend to center around accomodation rather than conf venue

After Dinner activities

  • Pubs and Bars
    • Pubs/pool:
      • Unimelb:
        • UBar or whatever it's called now, upstairs, Union House: dirt cheap beer, pool, Daytona, outside tables
        • PA's, cnr Grattan/Bouviere? between Swanston and Elizabeth: beer, pool tables, excellent food, outside tables
        • Naughton's, cnr Royal Pde and Morrah St: ghetto as hell, but literally across the road from Trinity, pool tables, cheap beer, awful food, sticky carpet
        • The Clyde, cnr Elgin/Cardigan: ghetto student haunt, cheap, long benches, beanbags
      • Brunswick St:
        • Royal Derby Hotel, cnr Alexandra Pde/Brunswick St: cheap beer, backpacker accom., pool tables, sports on projector, very comfy couches
        • Laundry, Johnston St (near cnr. Nicholson St): decent beer, some couches, a pool table, foosball also, a club on weekends
        • Red Triangle, Argyle St? upstairs, near cnr Johnston St/Brunswick St: no alcohol, ton of pool/snooker tables
        • Cue Club, Brunswick St, near cnr Johnston St: beer, pool
      • Carlton:
        • Pugg Mahone's, cnr Elgin/Drummond: pseudo-Irish, Guiness, Kilkenny, some decent but expensive food, outside tables in the summer, horrendous cover band upstairs on weekends

        • Workshop, cnr Elizabeth/A'Beckett, upstairs: Daniel's favourite, very laid-back, innovative outdoor smoking area, cocktails, beer, some music
        • Transport, Fed Sq, upstairs: very spacious, bit of an A-list (or C-list-wishing-they-were-A-list) vibe though
        • Trader Bar, Flinders Ln: price of drinks changes according to supply and demand, displayed on a scrolling stock ticker. Very cool.
        • Croft Institute, this little alley somewhere: lots of beakers and random scientific equipment everywhere.
        • Honkytonks, this little alley somewhere: vicious door staff (better be dressed well), expensive drinks, three levels, music.
        • The place across the alley from Honkytonks: a perfectly acceptable substitute if you don't get in to Honkys.
        • Loop, near the top of Lt Bourke: much cooler than you. Lots of new (often digital) art, and sometimes music structured around the art. Sometimes have film screenings.
      • Brunswick St:
        • First Floor, halfway up Brunswick St, upstairs: very relaxed, couches, usually some graff/stencils on the walls, cocktails and beer, awesome drinks
        • The Bar With No Name, cnr Brunswick/Johnston: small, cosy, drinks
        • Vertigo?: near cnr Brunswick/Johnston: laid-back hippy-ish crowd
      • Smith St:
        • The Bar Called Barry, near cnr Smith/Gertrude: rather big and spacious, cheapish drinks.
      • North Melbourne
        • Jawa Bar
        • Prudence
    • Cocktails:
      • Brunswick St:
        • Polly, Brunswick St, nearish Alexandra Pde: pimp as hell, red velvet everything, luscious cocktails at ~$16 a pop.
        • Ginger, Brunswick St, just south of Johnston St: much cooler and 'edgier' than Polly; sensational cocktails at around $14 a pop.
      • Errol St, Nth Melbourne
        • Rrose, 'personal fave of the team-co-ordinator' cocktails av $15.
  • Clubs

    • CBD:
      • Metro, top of Bourke St: pink polo shirts with the collars turned up and the women who love them.
      • Colonial Hotel/Brown Alley, cnr Lonsdale/King: Ridiculously loud breaks and drum 'n bass on the weekends. Three rooms.
      • Platform One, Flinders St (Banana Alley vaults): Random drum 'n bass, breaks, house, hip-hop, grime; room to sit down, good drinks.
      • Icon, near cnr Bourke/Exhibition: it's one of the stops on the Party Bus, and I think that's about all I need to say.
      • Spy Lounge, cnr King/Flinders: basically a Metro crowd. Very big place.
      • Heat, Crown: apparently closing down? Not before time, either.
    • Brunswick St:
      • Laundry/First Floor turn into clubs on the weekend.
  • Entertainment
