Introduction

How many attendees, what types of registration should be offer?

For 2007

KimOldfield: cap on number of attendees, 600?

DanielStone: I think this is a good idea; either 500 or 600, depending on demand.

StewartSmith: We'll fill 600 without a problem

JulienGoodwin: I was thinking that 650 is probably the absolute max that we can have and still be a "small conference"

JonathanOxer: There are two limiting factors here:

  • The "how big should it be?" question. General feeling is the current size is about right, and going much bigger (which would certainly be possible) would change the nature of the event and possibly spoil the community feel.
  • Venue size for keynotes. Canberra's hard limit of 500 was based on the capacity of the largest theatre available for keynotes, as is Dunedin's limit of 550.

Somewhere in the 500-600 ballpark would seem like the sweet spot to me.

PaulWayper: I see no problem with going larger - 800 to 1000 people - if this allows perhaps an extra stream. I think that the attitude of the people attending LCA is the deciding factor in how the event turns out - my opinion is that it's impossible for the event to become too commercialised and lose its 'hallway hackfest' charm if we keep the same kind of attendees that we've had at the LCA's I've been to ('05, '06, '07). I personally want more streams because that way more people will have a better overlap with their interest base, while keeping the numbers large.
