Draft 3

faye REVISED 2007-10-18 (based on suggestions made in Draft 2)

- This programme has been designed to reduce costs. Only one "far away" activity has been suggested (Sovereign Hill). Filler activities are listed because we may not know when an outing finishes-- I guess it may depend on when everyone has had enough (even if we set an end time, people might get bored long before but perhaps it's something we can all discuss on the day. This means that the Afternoon Fillers should be things that can start at any time).

- Meeting point is yet to be determined but will be at the conf venue. Perhaps the big Melbourne Uni tram stop on Swanston Street.

- The Sovereign Hill and Scienceworks/Williamstown itinerary means it's all day so no option for parents to take their children back for a nap.

- For Luna Park, if we finish at 2:00 then parents can take their children back to the hotel for a rest. But if we have people who want the afternoon activity only (Old Melbourne Gaol), that starts at 3 which might be too late. Then again I guess they're not attending the morning programme for a reason.

- ESTIMATED COSTS OF THIS ITINERARY
Please note these estimates are based only on the admission/transport fees listed. We'd still have to include any public transport tickets and LCA-provided meals. For things like Luna Park, how much you pay depends on the rides taken (parents will pay for those).

Adults: approx. $148.00
Children: approx. $90.00

DAY 1: MONDAY JANUARY 28 - MELBOURNE MUSEUM + LUNCH ON LYGON STREET + AFTERNOON FILLER ???

Meeting Point: 9:00am

Transportation:
- walk to the Museum (estimated time taken: 20 minutes?)

Museum Admission fee: Adults $6.00; Children and Concession Free (children 3-16 y.o.) http://melbourne.museum.vic.gov.au/

Depart Museum: say between 12:00 - 1:00? Can decide on the day, depending on how everyone feels (museumed out perhaps!)

Lunch: - walk to Lygon Street (investigate options for reservations)

- after lunch go to Galactic Circus - transport?

Afternoon Filler: Galactic Circus

- no set start time

Galatic Circus Admission Fee: free, but you pay for rides

SUMMARY OF MUSEUM COSTS: Adults $6.00; Children free

NOTES:
- this is a tricky one where people can stay for hours at the Museum or get bored quickly. We could set a finish time but discuss it on the day and say we can shorten or extend it as required. - investigate available food options along Lygon Street beforehand, book restaurant if required. Go to cake shops! - work out best transport route to Galactic Circus.

DAY 2: TUESDAY JANUARY 29 - QUEEN VIC MARKET TOUR + MELBOURNE CITY TOURIST SHUTTLE BUS + AFTERNOON FILLER?

Meeting Point: 9:15am

- QVM tours start at 10am

Transportation:

- catch tram to QVM Tour meeting point at 69 Victoria Street (nearest Corner Elizabeth Street)

- Tour: http://www.qvm.com.au/market_tours_foodies.php

QVM Foodies Tour Admission Fee: $28.00 (adults) $17.00 (6yo+) Free for under 6s - includes generous samplings, a coffee and an environmentally friendly shopping bag.

- shop around QVM if no tour

Lunch: 12:00

- Eat at QVM? (unless children prefer the Maccas nearby!)

After Lunch:

- attendees can leave from here, or continue on with the free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle (QVM is Stop 7 on the Tourist Shuttle route)

http://www.thatsmelbourne.com.au/info.cfm?top=259&pg=2183&cID=51

Tourist Shuttle Admission fee: free

NOTES:
- if we hop on and off to view half the sights then break for lunch and resume the tour, this could take around 4 hours perhaps?
- we would need an Afternoon Filler activity as a backup in case we finish very early (ie get bored with the Tourist Shuttle) - need to check if prams/strollers can be taken on the bus.

DAY 3: WEDNESDAY JANUARY 30 - SCIENCEWORKS VIA SOUTHGATE FERRY + FERRY TO WILLIAMSTOWN + TRAIN OR FERRY BACK TO CITY

Meeting Point: 8:50am
- Catch tram to Southgate

Transportation:
http://www.williamstownferries.com.au/
- Ferry to Williamstown Departs 9:30am Journey time 35 minutes

- Ferry fee (Southgate to Scienceworks): $10.80 (single) or $16.80 (return)

Arrive at Scienceworks: approx. 10:10am

Depart Scienceworks: 1:00pm (doesn't include planetarium)

Scienceworks admission fees: Adults $6.00; Children free.

Depart Scienceworks via ferry to Williamstown: 1:30? (need to check times with ferry company)
Ferry fee (Scienceworks to Williamstown): $6.80 (single)

Arrive in Williamstown: by 2:00

Late lunch: - find an option here (someone had previously suggested a deal with Breiroz Creperie); could pre-order pizza so it's waiting for us when we arrive and then take it to the park across the road? Alternatively eat at one of the pizza places there (La Porchetta or Porto Vecchio) however if we want to be back at Meeting Point before 5pm we should probably pre-order the pizzas.

- Walk around Williamstown after eating; walk along the pier (might be a battleship there); get some icecream.

Depart Williamstown: by 4:00pm (need to check with ferry company) or by train. Train is best as they are more frequent.

- Ferry fee from Williamstown to Southgate: $11.00 single
- or go back to the city by train

- finish up at Meeting Point by 5:00pm

  • Penguin dinner on this day, best to finish by 5pm.

SUMMARY OF FERRY COSTS: $10.80 + $6.80 + $11.00 = $28.60 (need to check if child and adult fares are the same)
Subtract $11 from the $28.60 if we are returning by train. SUMMARY OF SCIENCEWORKS COSTS: Adults $6.00 ; Child free (planetarium $3.00)

NOTES:
- The Scienceworks plan may be a tricky one if it's school holidays. - Need to see if prams/strollers can be taken on the ferry. - Sciencework food options: there's a cafe there which sells typical kiosk foods

DAY 4: THURSDAY JANUARY 31 - LUNA PARK + OLD MELBOURNE GAOL

Meeting Point: 9:00am. Catch tram to St. Kilda.

      • Need to find a morning activity to fill the time between say 9:30 and 11 ***

- St. Kilda beach?
- Morning tea around Acland or Fitzroy St?
- St. Kilda Botanical Gardens? (could be boring for older children)

Transportation:
" Tram No.16 - Now runs Melb Uni - Kew via Swanston St, St Kilda & Malvern. This trams stops directly in front of Luna Park."

Arrival at Luna Park: 11:00am opening time.
- Spend 3 - 4 hours there (inc. lunch)? If so, departure would be at around 2:00 - 3:00pm.

Luna Park admission fees: Free but you pay for rides.

Rides as follows:

Unlimited Ride Tickets
These tickets give you the freedom to enjoy all the fun rides as manytimes as you like all day.*

Adults (13+ yrs) $35.95

Single Ride Ticket Prices
1-3 yrs $3.00, 4 -12 yrs $5.50, 13+ yrs $7.00

Lunch:
- food available at Luna Park but it's all unhealthy kiosk stuff :( Should we provide some fruit?

Depart Luna Park: 2:00 - 3:00pm

- Catch tram back to CBD.

Afternoon: Old Melbourne Gaol at approx. 3:00 - 3:30 (arrival)

- self guided tours take approximately 45-60 minutes.

Old Melbourne Gaol admission fee:
- Adults $12.50; Concession $9.50; Children $7.50; Family $33.50 (2 Adults + 4 Children)

- Can be finished for 5pm, back at Meeting Point.

SUMMARY OF LUNA PARK ACTIVITY COSTS: depends on the rides
SUMMARY OF OLD MELBOURNE GAOL ACTIVITY COSTS: Adults $12.50; Children $7.50

NOTES: I'm a little mehhh about this one. Something like Luna Park is hard to judge because you can spend 2 hours there or 4 hours. Even if we set a time limit, say 3-4 hours, I'm a little concerned that people may want to leave long before then (especially if we have gone to Galactic Circus the day before). That's fine, but we need another Filler activity before Old Melbourne Gaol-- probably lunch somewhere. Pancake Parlour maybe?. Birrarung Marr would be fine if there were younger children, because of the playground and sandpit and we can always stroll around Federation Square. - if we leave Luna Park earlier than planned, I would prefer to eat lunch somewhere that is cool inside. Pancake Parlour is always good for children (and adults!) but the price sucks.

DAY 5: FRIDAY FEBRUARY 01 - SOVEREIGN HILL + AFTERNOON FILLER (if required)

Meeting Point: 8:30am
- Catch tram to Southern Cross Station
- Catch V/Line train from there at 9:08am.

Arrival at Sov. Hill: say 10:45am.

Sov. Hill admission fee:
Adults $35.00 (conc. $27.00); Child (5-15y.o.) $16.00; Family (2 adults+up to 4 children) $90.00
http://www.sovereignhill.com.au/

- "We have several parenting rooms, disability toilets, two automatic teller machines, a playground, drinking fountains, barbeques, a working Post Office, film supplies, wheelchairs free-of-charge and a hire service for strollers."

Transportation:
Sov. Hill Gold Rush Special - Return V/Line fares: Adult off-peak $19.60; Concession off-peak $9.80; Family $49.20 (2 Adults + 2 children under 15, using Family Saver)

"On arrival at Sovereign Hill customers who present their valid V/Line ticket will be entitled to a 10% discount on the entry price to Sovereign Hill and a free Cobb and Co Coach ride (normally $4.50 per adult)."

Southern Cross Station to Ballarat: Monday-Friday depart 9:08am arrive 10:32
Ballarat to Southern Cross Station: Monday-Friday depart 3:58pm arrive 5:32pm
http://www.viclink.com.au/news/service_alterations/regional_general/v_line_daily_goldrush_special_service_to_sovereign_hill http://www.sovereignhill.com.au/?id=goldrushspecial

Lunch:
- available at Sov. Hill

SUMMARY OF SOV. HILL ACTIVITY COSTS:
- Adult admission fee $35.00 + Return V/Line Adult fare $19.60 = $54.60
- Child admission fee $16.00 + Return V/Line Child fare $9.80(?) = $25.20
- note: 10% discount on admission fee if V/Line ticket is present.

Filler: Walk along Southbank
- only if people want to leave Sov.Hill early. If that happens then we need to kill time.
- a nice stroll along Southbank and we can stop somewhere for icecream/gelati (like Trampoline).

NOTES
- Sov. Hill recommend you allow 4-5 hours for sightseeing there. So if we arrive at the actual Sov. Hill gates at 11am then we have to leave on that 3:58pm train (I don't know if that includes the bus that runs from Sov. Hill to the train station-- will follow up).

Draft 2

faye REVISED 2007-10-07

Note:

This programme looks great - but there is concern that it costs too much - and I share this concern given that we may have to pay for half the participants out of the conference budget - so I'm proposing some cheap / free alternatives that we could substitute for some of the more expensive day trips. --kattekrab 12:14, 17 October 2007 (EST)

1 - Free Melbourne Tourist Shuttle

This is a hop on hop off bus - that goes to a range of city based tourist attractions.

2 - The Free Tram loop

3 - Galactic Circus Free entry - pay for rides

4 - Luna Park Free entry - pay for rides

(Faye 20071017:) no worries. I'm having big second thoughts about the Werribee Zoo. It's pricey (with the admission fee and the shuttle fee) and zoos are one of those things that you can get super bored with after an hour or two. And then there's the weather issue too. I was going to substitute it with the free tourist bus. Actually yes, I think I'll change the schedule to nuke the W. Zoo entirely. Scienceworks might be a bit of a stretch too. Then there's Sov. Hill and Puffing Billy. Both are far away and if there's going to be a far away trip then perhaps it should only be just one of them. P. Billy has the advantage of getting there by organised coach. Sov. Hill will mean getting the V/Line train, but Sov. Hill is more Victorian/Australian (something I've tried to keep in mind). faye

One stream only (for children and adults).

  • Obviously the days can be switched around to best cater to whatever else is happening at the conf.
  • Activities should start and end at the same time as the main conf so partners can meet up. Also makes it easier for people to remember when things start and finish.
  • Have the same meeting point every day.
  • Different events for morning and afternoon so people can attend one or both.
  • There are no set lunches apart from the BBQ, but food is available from the places listed. With the Gaol/Museum day, we can easily find somewhere to buy food from in between. *** Faye: need to investigate set lunch options ***
  • The Birrarung Marr & Scienceworks day should be the day after the Penguin Dinner, due to the late start and people can show up at 11am if they want to.
  • Scienceworks closes at 16:30. If we arrive there at say, 14:30 it may not be enough time.
  • Showbags for children please!
  • ID tags for children: child's name; parents' names+mobile numbers; PP person's contact details; any allergies/illnesses.

DAY 1 - Puffing Billy; Ian Potter Childrens Garden

Morning: 08:00

Afternoon: 13:00+

No set time for finishing up, people can leave at their leisure or may all decide to stroll around the rest of the Gardens.

DAY 2 - Werribee Open Range Zoo

Morning: 9:10am

For groups of 4 or more discount applies POA.

Children prices:

  • Under 3 Free 4-10 years $10.00 11-15 years $15.00
  • ZOO ADMISSION COST $22.00 for 16y.o+ $11.00 Children 4-11 FREE under 4s
  • Return time ???

DAY 3 - Birrarung Marr; Scienceworks

Morning: 9:30am

Noon: BBQ lunch along the Yarra (chefs need to start up the BBQ at 11:30 so food will be served at 12, hopefully we will get in first before other families this way)

Afternoon: 13:30

We can return to the city by train, saving a little money and giving the children a little train journey

Home time!

DAY 4 - Sovereign Hill

Return to city at approx. 17:30

DAY 5 - Old Melbourne Gaol; Childrens Museum/Museum

Morning: 9:15am (meet)

Early-ish lunch

1:00pm+:

From there, families can choose to see the rest of the Museum, as the Children's Gallery is mostly aimed for the 3-8 year old age group (but is still attractive to older kids!)

Afternoon (depending on what happens with the Museum):

  • Mini golf somewhere (is there mini golf in the city?) Maybe Fitzroy Gardens (Tudor Village, etc)?
