Introduction
(Added bu Alli Russell) So, is it worth scaling BACK the schwag? Just about everyone already brings a bag of some sort to the conference. Maybe we could consider how we can manage NOT to hand out bags. (they are a big pain, and very time consuming to stuff) Leave maps of the uni and Melbourne at the help desk, same goes for conference programs (especially if you have small ones in each persons badge) and any other stuff people think is vital.
Maybe instead, we could give out a wallet type thing? A sort of foldable travel document size thing, people could put bus tickets, etc. So, at registration, people get their wallet, badge, and a T-shirt. Would save on alot of trees (I dont know how many conferences I have been to and thrown out all the paper crap in my bag, mostly without even looking at it!) Flame away, I'm prepared.
(Added by Paul Wayper) I would totally agree with this - spare us all that stuff that people just throw into the landfill anyway. There are only two types of thing that I think should be in the 'schwag': things that make it easier for attendees to get more out of the conference (programmes, maps, guides to Melbourne, etc) and gear that they're going to use at the conference (notepad, ordinary non-branded pen). I find those retractable Cat5 cables useful, but I don't need a third. I definitely don't want yo-yos, frisbees, hats, or anything I'm not going to use basically every day at the conference.
What schwag should be given out? Find out on the Private:SecretShwagItems
- Calico bag
- Tangram
- Plush tux penguin? (from Everything Linux)
- Travel material
- Tram tickets - Melbourne Delegate Metcard
- too expensive to give one to everyone - perhaps instead we could buy some in bulk and have them for sale at rego desk?
- Map of University
- Map of Melbourne CBD and/or appropriate local area (see LocalGuide)
- TheGuide
- candy from Suga (in Chadstone or City) with Penguin or LCA logo in middle
- PaulWay says: caffeinated?
- penguin mints
- name tags, complete with mini conference program
- (T-)Shirt
- Male and Female t-shirt options
- PaulWay says: And please pick colours that suit people. Beige, brown and orange are right out!
- professional goodies, tool with phillips head screwdriver would be useful
- Pen, Paper, USB key?
- notepad
- USB mobile phone charger
- retractable ethernet cable in a little case (suggested below)
- Penguin lapel/tie pin?
- Sunscreen (very useful from 2007). (PaulWay: also get the ones that have a foam pad so that they act as an applicator as well as a bottle. That way you don't end up with poisonous hands.)
Stuff NOT to include
- Russell was given a funky speakers pen which may have caused problems for speakers catching a flight home with cabin baggage only - The pen could have easily been considered a weapon
- Please no backpacks, many people have heaps from past confs!
- The same goes for satchel shoulder strap bags - regular conference goers will already have an extensive collection.
- The calico bags are great, and can get used afterwards for grocery shopping - but even then only a relatively few people will actually use them.
- Note that it may be wise to have backpacks, but only as a purchasable item
- Many people also have heaps of drinks bottles taking up space in the cupboard
- Perhaps also purchasable?
