Speaker Problems
What do we do if a speaker is unable to do their talk (for whatever reason); similarly for other sessions that can't proceed as originally scheduled.
- Equipment failure (see Equipment Failure)
- Translation issues
- We should note that, while we'll do our best to accommodate everyone, that the primary language of LCA, and Australia, is English.
- Customs contacts
- We should do our best to sort this out far in advance. We could have a list of countries that do not get visa-free entry to Australia, and if one of these is selected, warn them that they REALLY should apply for a visa NOW (and that we can help with this: need a form letter prepared). This should be in addition to a generic 'please check if you need a visa: here's the visa-free page on DIMIA'.
- Cultural issues
- Such as?
- Backup content?
- We should have a roster of people who are prepared to present on interesting issues at the drop of a hat. As an encouragement for same, we could sponsor their attendance, on the proviso that they're willing to miss Rusty's/Keith's talk and have their presentation ready to go in another room.
Delegate notification
This will depend on the amount of notice, probably falling into three categories: before the day, on the day and at the beginning of talk.
- before the day
- on the day
- beginning of talk
by type of session
- keynotes
- backup content
- talks
- cancel talk or offer backup content; some speakers might nominate someone to give the talk for them (delegates should be notified of this if it's early enough).
- BoFs
- backup moderator or can often proceed without moderator; if there are several people on a panel, it's unlikely they'll all be out (unless they went to the same restaurant the night before).
- lightning talk
- backup MC
- keysigning
- backup organiser
- LPI exams
- backup invigilators (presumably this is up to LPI?)
- presentations at evening events
- backup content or do without the presentation
- evening event itself
- see Venue Failures
