Introduction

The MEL8OURNE team have chosen The University of Melbourne as our preferred Venue, however we have several alternative option if needed in case of numbers or other considerations.

General Considerations

This list from email from Faye Coker.

  • centrally located
  • close to food and drink
  • easily accessible by PT and car
  • range of room sizes for BOFs, tutorials, less popular talks
  • other Rooms
  • close to accomodation
  • seating arrangements, comfortable seating and legroom
  • overall appearance of theatres
  • air conditioning
  • lighting
  • powerpoints
  • ease of ingress/egress for presentation rooms/theatres
  • fire exits and emergency plans
  • good audio setup
  • projectors
  • cheap/free!
  • public phones
  • vending machines
  • escalators/elevators if needed
  • theatres close together to minimise transit time between talks
  • registration desk setup space
  • space for stalls (tables, storage)
  • hanging posters, banners etc
  • clean easily accessible toilets
  • lab with net access
  • security of lab
  • area outside theatres for talking/waiting
  • reserved seating: deal for venue staff/students?
  • rubbish bins
  • places to stick up conf agenda
  • fresh air space
  • rules/requirements of venue administrators
  • easy for attendees to meet partners going on a partners program tour/outing (if the conf is out woop-woop, it might suck for families who want to get together after the day's events)

MelbourneUni

After a venue visit the economics & commerce building looks very good, however it would require some changes to the format of LCA (not a bad thing, changes always happen)

In what way would it require changes? (That is, which details of the venue wouldn't fit?) --Jiri 14:13, 6 Apr 2006 (EST)

Current frontrunner, looking good, need to get an inside contact.

great location, advantage of having large grounds for us to sprawl out over, attendees to use, etc. Large lecture theatres can be had (max capacity about 530). Huge halls (up to 1200) can be booked, either through the uni themselves (Wilson Hall), or the union (Grand Buffet Hall or whatever, in Union House). Hotels within easy walk from Lygon St, or easy tram from the city. Best PT airport hookup with tram<->Skybus, although that really isn't saying much. Preferred accommodation could be split between Trinity and Ormond colleges. Good contacts at Trinity, Ormond are also friendly to this sort of thing. Second-cheapest airport taxi.

RMIT City

Need to contact to see what sort of deal we could get

no actual 'campus', but right in the middle of the city (good for hotels/transport). Has rooms which could hold 500ish.

No actual campus? Sure there are no sporting grounds but plenty of space to congregate outside (e.g. Bowen St and Alumni Square).

Best location for public transport. Melbourne Central station served by mostly all train lines.

Other venues - edu

Swinburn Hawthorn

kind of pokey to get to from the city. Are there hotels nearby? Can it hold large numbers of people in single rooms? IIRC has pretty decent colleges.

Well served by the Belgrave/Lilydale/Alamein train lines, so not pokey. Has no more of a 'campus' than RMIT from what I can tell.

Monash Clayton

large campus, however very far out from the airport, from public transport, from hotels, from most everything, really. It does have colleges.

Monash Caulfield

very small campus, couldn't hold our weight IIRC. No colleges?

Latrobe Bundoora

while the airport taxi is cheap, it's about 500 miles from civilisation.

Other venues - commercial

We have a preliminary quote for these commercial conference venues.

  • Melbourne Town Hall
  • Flemington Racecourse
  • Carlton Crest
  • Hilton on the Park
